Autumn is when students return to school and there are fewer travelers heading overseas, making it a great time to enjoy a vacation without having to deal with overcrowding. Technically known as the “off season,” savvy travelers can benefit from reduced prices on airfare, organized activities, and accommodations.
In Belize, autumn does not mean crisp evenings or trees losing their leaves. Instead, the autumn months fall during what’s known as the “green season,” a time of increased precipitation. However, this does not mean some kind of “monsoon” period. In reality, most of the rain in Belize falls during the overnight hours along with brief showers during the hottest part of the afternoon, cooling down the air and leaving the rest of the day to enjoy.
In fact, some of the most exciting festivals of the year in Belize occur during the autumnal months. The entire month of September is known as “Patriotic Month” because two important holidays occur during September. The fun begins on September 10 with The Battle of St. George’s Caye Day that commemorates the 1798 naval battle that led to Belize becoming the first and only British beachhead in Central America (and why Belize has English as its official language!). And September 21 is Independence Day, marking the occasion in 1981 when Belize became a sovereign nation. The entire period is marked by street parades, dancing, fairs, and live music concerts, making it an excellent time to visit.
