Increasingly, Belize is becoming a popular destination for gay and lesbian travel due to its beautiful, natural landscapes and fun-filled atmosphere. Although still a largely conservative country, Belizeans are very welcoming of transgender visitors and people from all walks of life.
Belize is a multi-cultural country where differences are embraced, making Belize gay travel both safe and fun. Even where locals may not be familiar with people openly identifying as an LGBTQ person, Belizeans are some of the friendliest people on the planet. And although the first Pride parade was held in 2017 in Belize, lesbian travel is safe and entirely incident-free.
Here are five great reasons why LGBTQ travelers should visit the country in September:
1 – Patriotic Month
The entire month is one big patriotic celebration due to two big holidays that fall during this month. The first is The Battle of St. George’s Caye Day on September 10 which commemorates a big naval battle that took place off the coast of the island of St. George’s Caye in 1798 in which the British soundly defeated a Spanish fleet.
2 – Independence Day
The dancing, parades, and celebrations continue straight through to September 21, which is Independence Day in Belize. People dress up in red, white, and blue (the national colors of Belize) and every town and village has a parade, live music, and/or games.
3 – Great Weather
The weather in September is simply fabulous. Expect highs of around 86F (30C) and lows of 77F (25C). You can also expect rainstorms during the small hours of the night and brief showers during the hottest part of the afternoon.
4 – Reduced Rates
With so many travelers heading back to school or work in September, this month is the perfect time to take advantage of reduced rates on lodging and tours to all of the top attractions in the country. Many top resorts and hotels offer substantial discounts of 20% or more, and airlines usually drop their fares in September.
5 – Celebrating With Locals
September is when many Belizeans working abroad head home to enjoy all of the festivities with their families. This gives visitors a great chance to meet locals and celebrate along with them. Belizeans are world-renowned for their friendliness and hospitality, so don’t be surprised if you get invited to a birthday party or a family picnic!
